How to Pass the CWNA on Your First Try
by Keith Charles
I have taught the CWNA and CWSP bootcamp for a few years. I have recommended this curriculum to certification and non certification pursuers. The books are well written even after considering the rapidity of change in the WLAN arena. Companies being pressured by each other and startups are prodded to create highly technical whitepapers that are invaluable to the test taker. One issue that was and continue to be raised is the amount of reading. The CWNP site lists a myriad of research papers. Believe me, they are pretty reserved and conservative in their list. There are thousands of vendor documents out there.
To the test taker I recommend, as was recommended before the importance of going through (owning) the course outline and objectives. I always suggested to students using it as a study tool. One cannot, or should not attempt the exam believing that they can for example, look at the "% of exam" and choose to ignore or browse any subject area. This exam is a well planned, well developed exam. My hats off to Mr. Devin Akin who previously developed these exams together with some of the most qualified wifi professionals out there. At one point I believed that you had to hold on to every explanation he presented on CWNP's forums. I still believe that today. The forums should not be bypassed. I got more information from the forums than any other source. Again I will stress manufacturers' papers. Aruba networks, AeroHive, Ruckus Wireless, Cisco, AirMagnet, Meru Networks, Motorola just to name a few. Do not be alarmed, they generally give their own spin on the same topics. Definitely put your hands on whitepapers from Devin. Identify the "A-list" responders. (Mr. Multipath, GT Hill, Keith Parsons, BryanH). These dudes know their stuff.
There are definite "must knows". I have generated a list of definitions for terminology and I believe CWNP has one posted online. I believe learning the terminology is not only valuable for test taking but also for job hunting(interviews). One great technique is to compare the old with the new. There are new topics added because there are new developments in the IEEE 802.11 standards. (radio chains, spatial multiplexing, transmit beam forming, maximal ratio combining). There is a lot of buzz about 802.11n, I am positive it will be beneficial to have it down to a science. Another great study practice is getting a print out of the CWSP outline and identify the topics on CWSP objectives that are repeats of CWNA. The course is extremely well written. There is no information that is irrelevant. You will have to know it at some point on your CWNP journey.
The practice exams are huge. Do not believe that getting 98% over and over is a guarantee that you are ready. Could be you are learning answers. The key is reading, repetition, and if you are adventurous, go through the IEEE standards. There use to be a CWAP exam. This exam was discontinued, but the books, though not completely up to date, are gems. I still go to my copy. My library includes the Definitive Guide by Matthew Gast, the IEEE 802.11 Handbook, WiFoo, Cisco WLAN security and I'm waiting on the release of the book on 802.11n networks. Also play with some tools (protocol analyzers, spectrum analyzers). Good luck to all you wifiheads and press on.
