Christian Financial Counseling
by Lerin Roberts
For many, getting Christian financial counseling might seem like a strange concept. Isn't money called "a root of all kinds of evil" in the Bible? No, it's the love of money that's condemned as a source of evil in Scripture. Money is a tool that can be used for either evil or good, just like fire or guns or spray paint. Money is also an important indicator of your spiritual condition. The Lord Jesus said that "where your money is, there will your heart be also." That's why he taught more about money than any other subject. Approximately two out of every three of Christ's parables dealt with humanity's relationship to wealth.
Christians are often susceptible to make bad financial decisions, just as non-Christians are, so why not seek Biblical solutions to those money problems? Aside from the aforementioned teachings of the Lord Jesus about money, the rest of the Bible has much to say about the topic as well, and a Christian financial counselor is trained to apply the wisdom of the Bible to our everyday financial lives.
Those who make bad decisions aren't the only ones who might need help. If you're preparing to make investments, write a will, give a substantial charitable contribution, or even write out a budget, a counselor can help steer you through mine fields of financial ignorance.
There is an abundance of sources of Christian financial counseling to be found. Many churches have trained financial counselors. An internet search can lead you to a professional counselor in your area, or to a national or international ministry such as Crown Financial Ministries or Christian Financial Ministries. You can even phone Dave Ramsey, who has a national radio program dealing with financial issues from a Christian perspective. Of course Dave won't be able to sit down with you to look over your budget, but he could mention something learned from Scripture that totally illuminates your understanding of a principle that will guide you for the rest of your life (can you tell I like Dave?).
Speaking of religious media figures, there are certainly abuses out there. Avoid the blab-it-and-grab-it, name-it-and-claim-it so-called "faith teachers" who are so prevalent on TV. You want wisdom that comes from the entirety of Scripture, not merely a few Bible verses pulled out of context. And before dealing with a national ministry, make sure they belong to the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, which was designed to prevent false ministries from fleecing the flock of God.
