Metal Gear Solid 4 Music

by David Smith

Metal Gear Solid games are especially known for their cinematic experience, and that includes having a top-notch soundtrack. The Metal Gear Solid 4 music does indeed not disappoint, and features some very memorable songs and melodies. Most of the songs in the game were composed by Nobuko Toda, Shuichi Kobori, Kazuma Jinnouchi, and Harry Gregson-Williams.

It's quite delightful to listen back through some of the game's songs, and have memories come flooding back. You don't realise it while you're playing, but you do remember a lot of the songs that are in the game (particularly during the long cut scenes) once you hear them back.

The highlight of all of the Metal Gear Solid 4 music is invariably the title track, named 'Old Snake'. Metal Gear Solid themes are usually action packed, exciting and inspiring (just think about the MGS2 theme, for example). This one, however, is sedated, and in keeping with the feeling of the game. Contrasts can be drawn between the theme, and the now-aging Solid Snake, who is clearly not as strong as he once was. My personal Metal Gear Solid 4 music on the soundtrack favourite is titled 'Here's to You', and was originally written by Ennio Morricone for the film 'Sacco e Vanzetti', but has been rearranged by Harry Gregson Williams especially for the game.

A two disc set is available to buy, containing all of the tracks from the game, and was released in May of 2008. A shorter version has also been released, containing only the 'main' songs from the game.
