Trans Resveratrol - What it is and What You Need to Know Before Taking It

by Karina Sinclair

Trans resveratrol is the technical name for the hot supplement know commonly as resveratrol. It actually is a substance produced naturally by plants when they come under attack by fungi. Commonly found in the skin of red grapes, trans resveratrol was first discovered by scientists studying the French Paradox.

The French Paradox refers to the phenomenon of the French people being able to eat a fatty diet, yet have low rates of heart disease. Scientists eventually linked this to their consumption of red wine, and specifically to resveratrol, a substance found in the skin of the grapes.

Since then, resveratrol has been found to have numerous benefits. Human studies have shown that a concentrated daily dose helps control blood sugar. Animal studies have shown an increase in longevity, decrease in cancer rates, decrease in heart disease, and a decrease in the formation of plaque in the brain, one of the risk factors for Alzheimers.

Currently, there are 12 clinical trials underway in the US to test these results in humans and to determine what a safe and effective dosage is. However, resveratrol is available commercially from many sources. It still needs to be verified by the FDA for any positive benefits, but right now, it appears there are very few negative side effects from taking resveratrol.

The most common negative side effect is a feeling like a caffeine rush. People also reported an increase in blood pressure and insomnia. Otherwise, the supplement appears to be safe for most people when purchased from a reputable dealer.
